Review of The Midnight Meat Train (2008) by Antonio S — 01 Oct 2009
I'm not a big fan of Clive Barker's work but this movie looks like it would work much better as a short story (which I may pick up eventually). The first half is fantastic. It leaves a psychological imprint that makes you cringe.
The cinematography is great and the lack of discretion shots enhance its eerie tone. Unfortunately, it starts to go downhill a little after the first half is complete, and it goes downhill fast. There is a very fine line between twisted and just plain over-the-top.
The ending is unpredictable but not in the "Oh! I should have seen that coming!" way but rather has the viewer say: "Oh...ok?". If you are looking for a short effective horror film then by all means see this, but if you are looking for something that makes a lasting impression, prepare to be disappointed.
Other than that its well-paced and incredibly entertaining.
