Review of The Midnight Meat Train (2008) by Philip B — 30 Dec 2009
(Deep breath) ...I think I kind of loved this. It's a fucking mess, the gore is infantile and ridiculous, the victim's-eye cam is a goddamn travesty, and it's, like, seven movies in one. But.
It's just so, so, so weird, in a way that I might even call "daring," that I can't help but be impressed by the places it tried, not entirely successfully, to go. Maybe the fascinating stuff is an inevitable product of Clive Barker's source material, the same way that there's a significant amount of magic in even the worst Lovecraft adaptation, but I think that to say this is to be seriously unfair to the film itself, which gets what it gets right really right.
It's hard to talk about what's surprising about it without giving away the surprise, and if you're not a horror fan there's not much for you here, but for those who like the genre, it deserves a screening.
