Review of The Midnight Meat Train (2008) by Steve W — 18 Oct 2010
The immature will dismiss this horror film because of the title. But its a shame, because this movie was one of the best horror films in a long time. This movie is bloody and violent, and has a good atmosphere. Some dislike the ending but I think its different and cool.
There were some things holding it back. Leslie Bibb plays the protagonist's girlfriend and she is not the best actress. There is one scene of over the top gore (eyeball scene) that was some lame CGI and it was totally silly. They could have just filmed it in a more subtle way and kept it the same.
Overall, the film has some fine acting from Vinnie Jones and Bradley Cooper, and its pretty creepy and ambiguous. A terrific horror film.
Just re-watched and its still fantastic. I'm bumping the rating from 3 1/2 stars to four.
You'll notice more subtle details in the film for sure. Leon goes through a dark transformation, and there are lot of things that 'reflect' this. from puddles of blood of usage of mirrors, Leon slowly starts to become more like Mahogany. He begins to eat meat, he even dresses up as a butcher at one point.
Mahogany also has more depth. He is like a butcher in real life, perhaps a bit over the hill and should retire, but he doesn't want to be replaced.
This is now one of my new horror favourites.
