Slasher films may be the toughest genre of horror to conquer. Sure the greats from the 70s and 80s, such as Carpenter and Craven, paved the way for future efforts but somewhere along the way slasher films have turned dull.
Too many rely on jump scares and in your face gore that's not presented in a good fashion. However with The Midnight Meat Train director Ryuhei Kitamura takes aim at reinventing the genre altogether.
Kitamura brings to the table a very, very stylized film that relies heavily on CGI and in your face gore which in the end comes together and works as a whole. Helping Kitamura is Bradley Cooper who offers a nice performance as the movies main character and Vinnie Jones who is damn scary as the movies main villain.
The last thing I'd like to mention is how well Kitamura shot the film and paced it. Considering how short the source material Kitamura was working with, he does a great job making the movie not drag along and become boring.
The Midnight Meat Train ranks among the elite in recent slasher films and offers a brilliant new take on the genre that hasn't been seen before.
