Review of The Meyerowitz Stories (New and Selected) (2017) by Teddy F — 18 Oct 2017
With a neat composition from Randy Newman, light humor, and an extremely well-written and natural feeling script, Noah Baumbach successfully creates a movie that observes several different issues regarding a family's dynamic such as divorce, raising a child, and sibling rivalry.
The movie's A-list cast is also at the top of their games, with great performances all around: Adam Sandler once again proved that he can do serious acting as well as anybody, Ben Stiller is as good as he was in Brad's status, one scene near the end, in particular, stood out to me, Emma Thompson disappeared into her role, and Dustin Hoffman is stupendous, supplying much of the humor in the film.
Elizabeth Marvel (House of Cards) is impressive as well, playing the forgotten sibling; she found a way to make a character you didn't expect to be interesting...interesting. Grace Van Patten also impressed me, playing Sandler's daughter in the film; as a young actress, she looks to have potential.
Besides a few awkward cuts between scenes (which I suppose had some purpose I clearly didn't understand) and a brief moment of slowness, "The Meyerowitz Stories (New and Selected)" is a fine film that I recommend you see if you have Netflix, and don't be surprised to see it appear a couple times come awards season.
