Review of The Messengers (2007) by Philip T — 17 Apr 2013
The Messengers is a generic, assembly line haunted house film. If you've seen even so much as a few haunted house films, you've already seen this one because it has no original ideas of its own.
Now, I don't mind it when a film uses familiar ideas, they just have to be put to good use. I loved Sinister, The House Of The Devil, The Woman In Black, and Insidious, even though they all used familiar ideas.
The difference? They actually worked and knew how to put those ideas to good use. However, The Messengers does have a few things going for it, like a solid musical score, a nice visual look, and the acting isn't too bad, but these things are weighed down by an awful, generic script, which makes the film boring and all too familiar.
Go find a better haunted house film, there are plenty of better ones to pick.
