Review of The Messenger: The Story of Joan of Arc (1999) by Steve B — 23 Jul 2007
This felt like a really pschitsophrenic film - started off suggesting that Joan of Arc really was God's messenger on earth, and then half-way through seemed to decide that actually she was just bonkers.
The casting and characterisation was odd (John Malkovich's king of France stands out particularly) and Milla Jovovich, who always seems a bit loopy, was on particularly pschitsophrenic form. All in all, I just wasn't quite sure what the message was supposed to be, and by the end of it I didn't really care one way or the other.
