Review of The Messenger: The Story of Joan of Arc (1999) by Nicholas F — 10 Mar 2010
Perhaps not a classic but a good solid film none the less. Similar in many ways to Braveheart and Lord of the Rings trilogy, in the battle scenes.
Positives.
*Visual impressive - stunning in parts.
*Solid acting with intensity.
*Impressive cast.
*Battle scenes look good in parts.
*Impressive ending.
Negatives.
*Use of English with the French, some sound English and some sound French.
*Use of modern idioms.
*Adding misplaced humour.
*Misplaced acting style in some parts.
*Historically inaccurate.
*A misplaced Dustin Hoffman as ''the conscience''.
*Loses its way a little towards the end.
*Overdone in parts, with acting, and scenes, particularly the rape scene, which is sickening.
Overall its not an epic by any means but a good recount of the Legend that is Joan of Arc, if not, a little disjointed and incogruent due to the historical inaccuracy. The modernisation works in parts, but goes against in others.
