Review of The Messenger: The Story of Joan of Arc (1999) by Michael M — 14 Sep 2010
I'm conflicted. I don't know whether to let my admiration of Jeanne get the best of me and slam Luc Besson or uphold him by saying that Leon the Professional absolved him of making this utter piece of dog shit.
Other than that, the cinematography is fine and there are some interesting scenes tied with an eerie, appealing soundtrack.
But, come on, people. Luc Besson's adaptation of the story of Jeanne D'Arc fails primarily because he paints Jeanne as so inexplicably brash and crazy that it's hard to believe anyone would give her the time of day, let alone follow her into wars with a foreign nation.
