Review of The Messenger (2009) by Jesse O — 24 May 2010
Ah just what I needed after New Moon, just a great great movie. Ben Foster and Woody Harrelson are fabulous in their roles. Woody Harrelson has always been a cool motherfucker and Ben Foster is a really underrated actor, in my opinion.
They have excellent chemistry with each other and it definitely shows in their scenes. You know before I watched this movie I was sort of thinking that this is about as close to 'Departures' considering the subject matter.
But boy was I wrong...there's a certain kind of beauty to the work that the characters in Departures perform and while they deal with death all the time, they bring a peace and comfort to the family, that it just makes it all worth it.
Not this movie, the job these guys have just HAS to be the worst job possible, delivering the news of a soldier's death to the next of kin. It must be a goddamn hard job to perform, since people will react differently to the news.
It's a job I definitely would NOT want. And this movie does a great job at presenting how Will's character deals with his job and how difficult it must be for him to be the one to break the news.
It's not all grim, though, thankfully. It has a really strong story and a strong script and an excellent cast to carry it. It's also very nicely shot. Not much else I can say, it has great character development, fantastic acting so you can't ask for more from this movie.
It's great and I definitely recommend it.
