Review of The Messenger (2009) by Richmond C — 22 Jun 2010
This movie was really screechy and manipulative. It's filmed in a detached documentary style, but the acting and script make sure that there's no question how you should be feeling at any given moment.
The movie doesn't really give you a choice on who you should be sympathetic to, who you should be hating, what you should be feeling at all moments. This made it all feel very condescending because it's supposed to be a realistic depiction of very serious and very contemporary scenarios.
It's a subject that should be treated with compassion and nuance, but instead we get images of soldiers being spat on and lines like "fuck protocal, these are human beings!".
