Review of The Merry Gentleman (2008) by Chris S — 03 May 2009
There are three strikes against Merry Gentleman from the get-go: the somber mood, the sluggish pace and the ugly camera work don't do it any favors. Yet this hitman with the heart of gold romantic saga turns out to be an absorbing movie.
If ever a movie title was misleading, it would be this one. You could hardly consider the damaged characters to be in good spirits. In fact, the lost souls here are downright depressed. But there is a strange sense of wonderment that has attached itself to this script.
Part dark comedy, part crime drama, part romantic scene study with religious overtones, this screenplay is highly original. But too often the suspense is sacrificed for mood and texture. If you can adjust to the leisurely gait and revel in the chemistry between the two lead actors, I can give this film a recommendation.
But if you are looking for an action packed adventure or a seriously moving love story, you will certainly be disappointed. The big mystery that this film poses is why it is being distributed during summer.
If ever there was a movie that screamed winter, this is it. Taking place in Chicago between Christmas and Valentine's Day, this would be a perfect flick for an urban snow day. Regardless, it has a hypnotic effect that leaves you in a melancholy state.
It is emotionally authentic, if a little dull.
