Review of The Merry Gentleman (2008) by Carl C — 19 Jul 2009
I saw this movie knowing almost nothing about it, and went away with the thrill of having discovered a hidden gem. The story is beautiful, suspenseful, and tragic all at once, and it grabs you the way every good narrative should.
There are multiple layers and subplots, but everything comes together in a way that doesn't feel contrived at all. The characters are multilayered, too, with qualities and charm that make them likable and flaws and weaknesses that make them human, and even with the one character I thought I felt safe hating, the ending makes it a bit more complicated than that.
There are no big fight scenes or unexpected twists, just a unique and compelling drama that I highly recommend.
