Review of The Men Who Stare at Goats (2009) by David S — 14 Sep 2011
An improbable spoof, amusing and entertaining, but not a great war classic. Telling what we all suspect about modern war, with a hint of satire but not penetrative or sharply critical, the film runs dangerously close to glamourising the war in Iraq.
Just because the futility and stupidity of war has been done so well before should not put the latest crop of film-makers off. Good start, lets dig deeper. There's space for another Catch 22, Goodbye to All That, All Quiet on the Western Front, Apocalypse Now, Deer Hunter in the post-Iraq analysis, but this is not it.
