In short-hand: this is a very well-made movie with a boring, confusing, and shallow story accompanied by the most overused plot-point in film-history. While watching it with a friend I went to the bathroom twice (because the movie is too long and predictable), and both times I came back what I thought would happen did. It baffles me how this movie was produced: on a technical-standpoint this movie is amazing, beautiful, and interesting (which is why it deserves 2 stars), but it seems to me like the writers had no idea what they were doing. Yes, the acting was great (another technical aspect), but the story seemed to suffer from an identity crisis. It wanted to be more than it could. Here are some examples:
Who is the main character in this film? Is it Jonas? No he didn't do much but "act cool". Is it the fat Chinese guy? No he died like 20 minutes in. Is it the daughter? No, she just got attacked by a shark. Is it the shark? No, there are many of them. WHO THE **** IS THE MAIN CHARACTER?!??!??!?
Where is movie even taking place. Yeah "the ocean", but where? Most of the movie takes place on some base with both English and Chinese speaking people. And some of the movie takes place in Taiwan. Where is the setting exactly?
If they keep getting attacked by Megalodons, why don't they just evacuate the base? Why did they have to wait until the end of the movie where it was too late.
The best way to describe this movie is garbage that is pretty to look at.
