Review of The Meg (2018) by Beyond The B — 10 Aug 2018
Ff this was supposed to be a campy B-movie, I was disappointed in the best way. It spends a lot of time on setup and is a slower ride than anticipated, more like how a James Cameron film builds towards the main event.
Compared to 'Rampage' & Pacific Rim: Uprising' - which were more schlocky B-movies - 'The Meg' is tense, thrilling, well-paced and balances out its characters well.
Yeah, it's loaded with clichés but manages to pull them off without causing offence.
When the film leans hard into B-movie action territory it's a lot of fun and delivers a good ol' summer action experience with some jaw-dropping moments of spectacle - especially during the climax. But the film also dips its toes into 'Jurassic Park' territory and has plenty of sci-fi action/thriller elements to give it plenty of dramatic weight.
Overall, it's the best of the big budget killer shark movies since 'Jaws' and one of the better films of 2018, I highly recommend checking it out.
Don't go in expecting a campy non-stop thrill ride though, it's a more intense and headstrong experience with light-hearted/banter moments sprinkled throughout.
