Review of The Meg (2018) by Joseph D — 11 Aug 2018

No, this isn't an edition to the Family Guy franchise, this is yet another example of why I HATE THE OCEAN!!!!!!! & I'm cool with Jason Stathem.

THE MEG.

I grew up on Jaws, so for me, it's the benchmark. Does this film live up to that classic? I'm gonna have to say YES IT DOES!!!!! This film has all the elements of that horror classic, & all the elements of those cheesy low budget sci-fi action flicks the SYFY channel is famous for, all mixed together in just the right amounts, so what we get is a sci-fi action flick with equal amounts of cheese, & AWESOME SAUCE!!!!

At about 1 & a half hours, we hit the water swimming! No time is wasted. The whole story flows along at a quick & steady stream, coming to a spectacular head!

Once again, Jason Stathem proves he is both classic action tough guy, & lovable rogue, his movies are never boring, & this one is no exception! The other standout character was a little girl who was intelligent, likable, endearing, & funny. I hope the actress sticks around in Hollywood, 'cause she was awesome. The rest of the cast did great, we were introduced to a lot of people in a hurry, but we had just enough time to get to know them, so when some started dying, we felt the moment.

The effects were ok, you could tell what was CGI & what wasn't, but the CGI was so beautiful, it didn't take away from the experience, plus there was a generous bit of practical stuff sprinkled about to help with believability.

The music was a blend of modern pop & classic horror orchestra, which really sold the film's "SYFY original movie on steroids" feel.

Overall, The Meg is one of the best "cheesy popcorn movies" I've seen since Independence Day (which I loved). It was the best of Jaws, Moby Dick, Deep Blue Sea, & all the old Dino vs Human cheese feasts of SYFY fame, combined into one whale shark of a good time! I'm givin' it 4 stars outta 5!
