Review of The Mechanic (2011) by Dougal S — 02 Jul 2011
One day Jason Statham might make a film where he doesn't play an all action assassin or secret agent. One day. But not with this film.
In a remake of a an obscure Charles Bonson film Statham plays his usual character - a brooding obsessive hitman who undertakes high risk missions to take out people the law can't touch. When his mentor is murdered he seeks revenge but in doing so is saddled with his friends son who wants to follow in his father's footsteps. As his obligation to his mentor threatens to put his life at risk he has to make a decision on who to trust.
There's really little else to say about this film. If you've seen any of Stathams films then you'll know what to expect. He's brooding and performs a series of outrageous stunts and chase sequences whilst killing a bunch of bad guys. It's not a bad film (well if you like this sort of action flick - which I have a bit of a liking for I'll admit) but there's nothing to really raise it above anything else from the genre.
A 'switch off your brain on Friday night after the pub' type film for fans of the genre.
