Review of The Mechanic (2011) by Jing B — 16 Jul 2011
The Mechanic uses the familiar tried and tested concept of apprenticeship as a base for an action movie, and against all the expectations, it proves to be an entertaining package.
Jason Statham had a brilliant start to action stardom in the early 00's, even if the action movies as a genre seemed to be slowly but surely dwindling. Thust J.Statham seemed like a fresh face who could take the torch from the aging bigshot action stars and provide cool action movies for the massses, but sadly as of late, his movies have not impressed much. Thus the hopes were not high with this 70's remake movie The Mechanic, but it turned out to be ok.
After a ironic set of events a stone cold assasin (Jason Statham) decides to foster his old colleague's son (Ben Foster) and train him in the art of assasination. Story is simple as it sounds, straight to the point vengeance movie with very few if any plot twists. This turns out to be better for the movie as way too many action flicks are ruined these days with nonsense side stories and too much character depth. Even the must be included sex scene in The Mechanic is fast forwarded to allow more time for what matters, Action. And the action in The Mechanic does not dissapoint, even if overly done in almost all aspects it remains watchable and cool through the movie. The two stars of the show also work well together, J.Statham gives his basic badass performance as the mentor assasin, which works well for the movie and his partner in crime and student, Ben Foster, is quickly proving to be a action actor to be reckoned with.
The Mechanic is a good action movie which does not bother the viewer too much with unimportant nonsense and focuses to the point; action. The story of two hired killers surely does appeal to the ones with high moral code, but others who like action movies should not be dissapointed with it. Now one needs to see the original movie to do some comparison.
