Review of The Mechanic (2011) by Dominic P — 03 Jun 2012
Cockney hard nut Jason Statham (The Expendables 1-2, Crank 1-2, The Transporter 1-3) adds another nondescript but violent thriller to his resume. This time a remake of the 70's Charles Bronson/Jan Michael Vincent vehicle , The Mechanic.
Director Simon West (Con Air, Tomb Raider) adds some visual flair, but otherwise you'd be better off with the original. The twists and turns in the script depend on lazy coincidence and any attempt to delve into the psyche of a hitman is paid lip service at best, squandered at worse.
Ben Foster (Pandorum, 3:10 to Yuma) Tony Goldwyn (Ghost) and model come actress Mini Anden support. Donald Sutherland takes the money and runs in what amounts to an extended cameo.
