Review of The Mechanic (2011) by Spyros T — 13 Dec 2012
From a director like West, I was expecting a time waster. He's a pretty crappy filmmaker when you really think about it, but after The Expendables sequel and now The Mechanic it seems that he's learning.
I did enjoy The Mechanic (I haven't seen the original yet), not something that I'm itching to see again or something that I'd buy but I enjoyed it. It's an entertaining film with better performances than some of Statham's usual productions.
Foster was really good, and I'm glad to see him getting some more diverse roles. First The Messenger, now this. For awhile there I was getting sick of seeing him play the moustache twirling villain (Hostage, 3:10 to Yuma, 30 Days of Night, Alpha Dog, etc.
). Also pretty much everyone else in supporting roles were unusually good. As if they didn't know they were in a throw-away action flick and half way through convinced West to elevate the material.
I can't think of one bad performance in this film. But, in the end, what did it really bring to the table to make it memorable? It's going to go down as an average action/thriller with likeable characters and a few cool shootouts and fistfights.
The story tried too hard to be this reflective, soul searching, killer-with-a-conscience kind of thing, but it didn't work.
