Review of The Mechanic (2011) by James R — 14 Apr 2013
Fast, unforgiving, incredibly forgettable. This seems to sum up just about all of Statham's films. I like the guy, but he seems to be horribly typecast outside of "The Expendables" films.
"The Mechanic" follows the story of a hitman as he tries to uncover the truth behind the assassination of his mentor. This is a remake of a Charles Bronson film. I haven't seen it, but it's a Bronson film so it was probably better than this.
The film is fast and ruthless, but it never delves any further into the dark territory it teases. The acting is alright. I'm not really sure why Donald Sutherland was in this, other than the fact that they needed someone with a good list of films to attempt to add some form of humanity to this.
Statham seems to be sleep walking this role, but that isn't surprising since he's been doing that since "The Transporter". The action is pretty decent, but nothing to write home about.
At the end of the day, this is probably one of those cases of this being a remake of a much better film.
