Review of The Mechanic (1972) by Gw S — 22 Oct 2009
I can't give this film a bad review. It's so earnest in its attempt to show an existential alienation for a rich, cultured contract killer.
I don't know many of these types so how can I argue with a man who throws knives, does judo, and squeezes a ball of wax while staring at an original Bosch playing classical music at full blast? It could happen, if Jean Pierre Melville moved to Malibu.
Bronson is his usual self. Jan Michael Vincent is good as a punk named Steve who wants to follow Bronson's Arthur Bishop into the business, like his dad (played by Keenan Wynn).
They're making a new version with Jason Statham, directed by the guy who did Con Air. Hopefully, they won't make it one of his conditional movies, like Statham can't leave his ball of wax for more than ten seconds or his liver will explode.
