Review of The Maze Runner (2014) by David J — 10 Jan 2016
The Maze Runner is another in an ongoing trend of high-budget YA movie adaptations. This one is short on the romance but delivers in the action. It also succeeds in creating an intriguing world, which is called "The Glade" in the plot.
Dylan O'Brien is good enough as Thomas, the main protagonist, and his supporting cast keeps up with him for the most part. There is no glaring weakness among the young actors, though Kaya Scodelario's Teresa adds nothing to the plot, just serving as a faithful part of the book (her character supposedly becomes much more central in events the sequels will cover).
The movie succeeds in creating tension, as the beasts that hunt the "Gladers" are fearsome despite the nuttiness of their anatomy/appearance. Its a fun romp, even though its relatively standard flair and somewhat resembles the Hunger Games a lot more than I had expected. There are a few notable plot holes that are more than just "ignorable.".
