Review of The Maze Runner (2014) by Iac — 02 May 2015
Great visuals and action sequences, had me on the edge of my seat when we were in the maze, but left me rolling my eyes most of the time when we weren't. Heavy on exposition, light on character, curious in it's heavily biased gender commentary? I felt the actors had very little to work with in terms of depth, and the more we learn about the world of Maze Runner, the more complete nonsense it is.
Maybe instead of building a multi-billion dollar maze armed with two ton bionic scorpion monsters, WCKD could have better focused its funds building idyllic green glades for apocalypse survivors to live in? Gally changed his mind last minute, got through the maze on his own without the key so he could.
..??? Hold them at gunpoint, spouting meaningless maze rhetoric? Manipulate us into caring that one more maze kid predictably died after like ten of them just got ripped into bloody pieces? O'Brien is a talented actor but he can only do so much in yet another clichéd "chosen one" narrative that has no interest in creating unique or interesting characters.
