Review of The Matrix Reloaded (2003) by Mrmoviebuff — 09 Oct 2016
'The Matrix' (1999) was a movie that I mentioned was groundbreaking and filled with innovative action scenes as well as iconic characters along with an inventive premise. It's pretty much the Wachowskis' answer to 'Star Wars' (1977)... unlike "Star Wars" however, the sequels that came after George Lucas' legendary sci-fi epic arguably got better and furthered the franchise... 'The Matrix Reloaded' is a sequel that felt like it was only made due to the predecessor's unexpected success.
We see that Neo (Keanu Reeves), is trying to cope with having nightmares about the death of Trinity (Carrie-Anne Moss), as he believes that his dreams are foreshadowing a future event. His concerns trouble him to focus as he is "The One". Morpheus (Laurence Fishburne) also returns and tries to deal with protecting the people of Zion.
Neo discovers more about himself as he unlocks an unexpected truth that leaves him questioning his motivations and what could happen.
'The Matrix Reloaded' is filled with more characters and has more entertaining and exciting action scenes than its predecessor... but the movie is so exposition heavy and there is too much to learn to the point where you're left feeling whether you should care. Morpheus seems a bit bland in this installment as all he does is explain new information in quite a stiff manner... I do not criticize Laurence Fishburne's acting abilities as I believe that the screenplay - also written by the Wachowskis - only allowed Fishburne to showcase as much emotion as he could.
The film, overall, feels bloated and blown out of proportion... it's still an entertaining spectacle... but instead of learning new things about certain characters like in "The Empire Strikes Back" (1980) did, there is just padded and filler information that feels unnecessary and only used to make it feel more deep and philosophical.
Entertaining... but just too much.
