Review of The Matrix (1999) by Angela W — 07 Oct 2013
This movie is definitely one of the greatest science-fiction films of all time. Forget the sequels, this film tells a complete, masterful story all by itself. Everything in the film is perfectly composed to reinforce the overarching philosophical themes that guide the film.
I could write a philosophical essay explaining the significance of the ship's NAME, the "Nebuchadnezzar," for the film's themes. Like "They Live," "Blade Runner," and other great Sci-Fi films, "The Matrix" deconstructs the self and - quite literally, in this case - the life-world, seeing them as constructed in insidious ways by inhuman forces.
This film has insightful things to say about philosophy of mind, Platonism, epistemology... in short, it's a philosopher's paradise. Absolutely MANDATORY viewing. (To be perfectly honest, if you don't like this movie, I honestly think you're missing something important.
