Review of The Matrix (1999) by Max H — 17 Jul 2013
It's amazing how many people in modern society know this film, and know the famous "Matrix moves" but how very few have actually seen the movie. That being said, The Matrix is probably the benchmark and core for all sci-fi films to come.
The science-fiction department has always been an issue in Hollywood, directors think that just by making impressive visual effects that it would make up for the formulaic plot and uninteresting heroes.
What makes The Matrix several cuts above the rest of the films in its category is that there are simply no loopholes. The script is intelligent but not geeky so that the average audience does not have trouble figuring out what is going on.
The choreography is spectacular with the famous dodging bullets scene that is so highly regarded by people in the film industry today. The acting maybe not the best Keanu Reeves but I don't believe there is another actor who has box-office appeal but could portray the uneasy and vulnerable protagonist, Neo, to a T the way Reeves did.
Come to think of it, if you put any actor alongside Laurence Fisburne you would confuse that actor for being terrible. Fisburne was probably the star of the Matrix playing a most incredible Morpheus playing the role he did.
Overall The Matrix is an ingenious combination of Hong Kong action, ground-breaking Hollywood FX and an imaginative vision.
