A huge cliché I know, but this film changed my life. It appealed to me on so many levels. I've met people that think it's just another mindless 'Bad Boys' style popcorn flick: there's a lot more to it than that. It's thought provoking in a way that big Hollywood blockbusters rarely are. Some people miss the metaphor completely and think the Matrix is implying we are actually in the Matrix. It's about control and the importance of questioning our surroundings. At the same time, you can also un-plug your brain and enjoy the action/soundtrack. I remember the 1st time I heard "I know Kung Fu...", "Show me", I went into a full on geek spasm.

I can make several comparisons to the film 'Highlander', and I don't mean the plot. Like Highlander, The Matrix is a film that I and a lot of people of my age are very fond of. When revisiting both films, they are now somewhat of a guilty pleasure, but still good. And perhaps most importantly: like Highlander, DO NOT watch the sequels. They are all laughably bad and only retract from the memory of the 1st film.
