Review of The Matrix (1999) by Mike P — 04 Sep 2014
Amazingly enough this film evaded my interest until 2014. Now that I've taken the pill I am of two minds on the film. One mind says that this movie has an awesome, ground breaking plot of how reality is perceived and what reality truly is.
On the other hands its Keanu Reeve's pretending to be the chosen one battling epic character actor Hugo Weaving into submission. The style of this movie has been copied time in and time out over the past fifteen years, but should that automatically make this a classic? Fishburne and Weaving are the only two characters even worth mentioning after this movie.
The script is solid as are the visuals, but it doesn't shock me the Wachowski's haven't recaptured that fire since. The story alone is worth the ride as is the fact that this is one of the last R-Rated action films that's been able to garner profit.
Gotta miss the 80's and 90's when R-Rated action was done in droves. On the down note the characters weren't all that engaging, the dialogue other than Weaving and Fishburne was pretty flat and garners way more acclaim than the film actualy deserves.
Think Avatar. By it's end however, I cannot say this isn't a good action movie, even slightly above average. This may be my most bi-polar review ever, but this one never mesmerized me and I attribute that to average directing and substandard acting from Keanu himself.
That being said THE MATRIX isn't a lost cause just a slightly over glorified one.
