Absolutely deserves 5 stars. With the help of manga/anime influences like Ghost in the Shell and Akira, The Wachowskis took Plato's Allegory of the Cave and masterfully applied it to modernity. The cinematography is immaculate, the special effects and action sequences are unrivaled to this day, and the characters are so well realized that every scene exudes tension and drama.
Sixteen years after its release, The Matrix holds up beautifully.
