Review of The Matador (2005) by Jeff C — 21 Apr 2008
Aaron and I watched this movie a few weeks ago on DVD. Based upon the previews, I thought it would be a straight comedy, but I was wrong. The Matador, according to IMDb is about "a globe trotting hit man and a crestfallen businessman meet in a hotel bar in Mexico City in an encounter that draws them together in a way neither expected.".
Pierce Brosnan (*swoon*) plays the hit man, who essentially suffers a midlife crisis. Greg Kinnear plays the mediocre businessman/nice guy who ends up saving the hit man from himself.
The story is an interesting one and makes the movie deeper than your typical straight comedy. The actors do a good job playing both of their respective characters in a real flawed way. They were both believable and likable.
There is intrigue and a couple of twists in the plot. There is violence, but it's not gratuitous. The beginning of the movie seemed choppy to me and I started out thinking I was going to absolutely despise the movie, but in the end, I found myself rooting for both of the characters and actually empathizing with them.
I laughed...and I think I even sniffled a little, though I won't admit to crying. (I don't think Aaron noticed anyway... *wink*) Aaron seemed to actually enjoy the movie too...which isn't that big of a shock. He tends to either hate or love movies. There's usually not anything in between with him.
While this is a middle of the road movie with respect to its rating, I'd still recommend seeing it, particularly if you like watching Mr. Brosnan in his undies. *slurp!*.
