Review of The Matador (2005) by Kirby P — 07 Feb 2010
The Matador is one of Pierce Brosnan's first films after losing the part of super-spy 007, and it is also one of his best films. Brosnan plays the part of Julian Noble, an aging hitman who gets tangled up with businessman Danny Wright via coinciding trips to Mexico.
The two become friends, but quickly have a falling out. Some time later Noble gives his old friend a late night surprise, and the stage is set for the end of the film, which very nicely delivers. The plot contains a few nice surprises, and while it's not a particularly long movie coming in at around an hour and a half, it accomplishes everything it sets out to do.
The characters are what really makes the film, and Brosnan shines as Julian Noble. Greg Kinnear and Hope Davis provide good support and interesting interaction with Noble. The Matador is a funny, intriguing succesful dark comedy, sure to satisfy any fan of either the genre or Brosnan.
If you're neither, you may want to stay away.
