Review of The Many Saints of Newark (2021) by Raortiz89 — 02 Oct 2021
The performances were good and backdrop was very interesting. However, the ending was a little anticlimactic and leaves certain plot threads unresolved. The most interesting part of the film was the connection to the race riots of the 60’s and the idea of new character Harold stepping on Moltisantis toes, but things end just when they should start getting the most interesting. It may have been better as a miniseries so they could expand more on that aspect as well as given new and old (younger) characters a little more development than 2 hours allows. In fact, this felt a little more like an extended pilot for such a miniseries (maybe it is and I haven’t seen anything on this yet, so excuse the ignorance).
Overall, I enjoyed the performances and it was nice to visit this world again. I was never bored and liked the connections to the series. But, for people who aren’t already fans of the show or people expecting something that stands on its own, it may be disappointing. All in all, it was an entertaining, if not forgettable, ride.
