Review of The Manchurian Candidate (2004) by Gemma F — 16 Jan 2008
Basic complaint, from most reviewers: The original is such a ground-breaking classic, leave it alone, STFU Jonathan. My response: No. This concept *needs* to be updated, applied to every dishonest war, every corrupt regime, every parent who exploits their own child for a ridiculous ideal.
The paranoia is constant, only rising as we advance further into the 21st century. Besides, this is a *gorgeous* film, beautifully acted on every count--some of Liev Schrieber, Denzel Washington AND Meryl Streep's best work, and that's saying a Christful lot.
Demme doesn't work much these days, because he dares to be political and *care*. Care on, Jon.
