Review of The Manchurian Candidate (2004) by Chris Q — 31 Aug 2008
Update to the great 1962 film of the same name. The whole cast does a good job in a movie that is probably a conspiracy theorists ultimate dream. I agree with the comments that this movie is slow in parts, and stretches believability in others.
Also, the film's suffers from a few major flaws in basic logic and ignorance of real world facts. Still Marco's (Washington) decent into near madness is fascinating to watch. The mind control elements of the story are supposedly based on actual research.
The story includes an interesting examination of how far people would be willing to go to obtain and hang on to power. There is also a clever moderization of the Manchurian reference in the title; which provides intriguing commentary on the power of large corporations.
Overall. not a "shut off your brain" movie.
