Review of The Manchurian Candidate (2004) by Robin P — 10 Oct 2008
Better acting than the 1962 version, and with a story that is updated to modern day in a surprisingly effective manner. overall, though, weaker, as it strikes one as a generic action/thriller whereas the 1962 version had a lot more political questions raised, greater vested interest in the characters, of course the fantastic dream/brainwashing sequences, and the simply kickass twist reveal.
the 1962 version was definitely closer to the source material than this one. even without all those things, this version is still entertaining, and with so many (sensible!) changes from the 1962 version that even those who have seen the older one will not be sure which way this one unrolls itself.
