Review of The Manchurian Candidate (2004) by Max E — 27 Dec 2011
I think this is DW's weakest film so far, at least the weakest I've seen. It suffers from some frankly bad camera shots, including POV and some pans that remind me of early film school mistakes, as well as poor choices in editing, too many fades and irritating music.
I found the exposition very flimsy, and the story implausible and vague, remaining largely unresolved. The mix of politics and thriller/mystery was very ineffective for me; I almost immediately compared this to The Contender, an entirely different class of depth, dialogue and tone, crossed with Courage Under Fire.
Overall, dull and overrated; I can't quite grasp how it got such high praise.
