Review of The Manchurian Candidate (1962) by Tomas T — 11 May 2010
The Manchurian Candidate was a movie ahead of it's time, in retrospect a thriller involving Communist brainwashing of Korean war hero and using him as a pawn to assasinate the U.S president was too much for the 60's audience.
The movie is however solid gold, an intense political thriller that intrigues the mind through the ride. The plot is built together brilliantly, dropping clues about the ultimate end drop by drop through the running time. After the war, the main character's war comerades start having nightmares about their war experiences and notice that for some odd reasons they all like and respect Raymond Shawn, their war savior, even though he is not very likable character at all. More oddness is added to the mix when mysterious solitaire games start to have incredible power of suggestion over the lead character. Slowly the plot starts to reveal itself keeping the viewer guessing to the very end. Overall the movie is quite far from mainstream even in today's standards.
The Manchurian Candidate is powerfull, thought invoking, full of drama and intension. No more can be asked from a movie, it is a perfect thriller.
