Review of The Man with the Iron Fists (2012) by Mark R — 13 Apr 2013
Deliciously over-the-top gore and martial arts mayhem make for a schlocky slice of entertainment. If the direction feels a tad indulgent in its homage to the Shaw Brothers Kung Fu films of the 70s then it's entirely appropriate in my view, as the RZA has made his love for this genre known long ago with his Wu Tang Clan videos.
However, at times he loses focus and does not have mastery that his mentor Quentin Tarrantino displayed in the Kill Bill movies.
The script is also sometimes lacking as the Voice-Over narration suffers from RZA's onerous delivery. It is also apparent that co-scriptwriter Eli Roth lacks Tarrantino's flair for snappy back-and-forth.
That being said, the film does feel like a Grindhouse picture and for the most-part succeeds in this endeavour. The film may have benefited from another actor in the central role, such as Jamie Foxx as the RZA is not really up to carrying the movie.
That being said I did enjoy the movie, with the action and music being a particular highlight.
