Review of The Man Who Would Be King (1975) by Owlz N — 29 Mar 2010
Amazing film.
I'm a little surprised that it wasn't called "The Man Who would Be a God", but yeah the other title sounds better.
So why is this film so good?
Well it's got a compelling story, funny at parts, you might learn something about English Imperialism, and did stuff about The Free Masons before the Da Vinci Code came along.
It's an epic film about two travelers who seek fortune and fame in a hostile land almost forgotten by western civilization.
Connery and Caine are a perfect pair in this movie. I don't think I've seen a movie with such memorable characters who also managed to feel very close. You really feel the bond of these men as fellow soldiers, mason brothers, and friends. It becomes almost heart breaking to watch some of the events unfold which threaten their lives and friendship.
It's just a masterpiece of a story set to film, and I believe I could recommend this to anyone over the age of 12 (Although I did see this when I was 7).
