Review of The Man Who Would Be King (1975) by Anssi V — 10 Oct 2011
Okay, it was good escapism and the two main actors were great, but that's partly the problem in itself. This movie would be nothing without Sean Connery and Michael Caine that play pretty much themselves in this one.
It's Sean Connery, who's made the king of the Kafirs, not Daniel Dravot, who he's supposed to portray. And that's Michael Caine, who retells the story to Kipling (Christopher Plummer), not Peachy Carnehan.
The plot itself isn't bad, but it's not that exciting either. It starts out really well, with Freemasons and two likable rogues deciding that India of all places is too small for them. It even continues well throughout their story, but the ending comes out of nowhere and is rather.
.. dull, dare I say. And I'm not even sure why it is dull, to be truthful. There's a big fightscene, there's tragedy and while it was rather predictable, it was not terrible. Perhaps it's just that the rhythm of the story was broken.
I thought that the movie would go on for at least half an hour longer, but instead it just ends. So yeah, an average movie, but the two main actors are a blast to watch, so I recommend that you see this one.
