Review of The Man Who Would Be King (1975) by Daniel K — 09 Aug 2016
3: Not quite deserving of being called a cinema classic, but it's close. I think I saw at least part of this on my Grandparents farm when I was younger. It's an epic story that demands a director like Huston in order for it to be told properly.
One couldn't ask for a better trio than Connery, caine, and Plummer either, although it certainly would have been spectacular with Bogart and Gable, who were at one time slated to be the protagonists.
It rings true as a tall tale or a grown-up fairy tale/myth, which is precisley the tone needed to heighten the thrill and impact. One can't imagine something like this occurring in present day, but it does seem possible for it to have happened at some point in the magical past.
One wishes there were more pictures made like this. It's a bit like a more reserved and magisterial version of Indiana Jones.
