Review of The Man Who Wasn't There (2001) by Ashley C — 12 Apr 2008
Five or six years ago when I last saw this, I wrote it off as decently plotted, well acted, but thematically vacant. Well, half a decade can make quite a difference; then again, it may have just been my mood at the time.
My reaction this time was not dissimilar to my reaction to No Country for Old Men - for the first half hour or so, it seemed we were being given more of the same from the Coens' playbook - stylized dialogue and delivery, off-the-wall plot elements - before the film revealed that it did have its own identity and that every element was there for a reason. Even the UFOs made sense.
Awesome lighting and deep-focus shots by Roger Deakins. The compositions with Thornton, McDormand, and Shalhoub in the interrogation room particularly stood out to me.
