Review of The Man Who Wasn't There (2001) by Ryan P — 10 Mar 2009
The coens make another deeply engrossing film. thornton seems to be thoroughly absorbed in this role even though ive never been particularly impressed with him before. the b&w photography is superb from, you guessed it, the great roger deakins.
in a way the film is an homage to film noir but it really seems to be more than just a genre deconstruction. there is something in the routinely excellent writing of the coens that touches some far more artistic and philosophical ends.
performances were great all around, the story kept me glued to the tv, and the style was pitch perfect. there is pretty much nothing to complain about this.
