Review of The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance (1962) by Tony E — 31 Mar 2008
Has a good case for being the best ever Western. The Searchers,r Ride The High Country or 3.10 To Yuma (the original) might well dispute things but it's certainly up with the best.
A seminal cast helps with John Wayne, James Stewart, Lee Marvin and Woody Strode amongst the Western notables.
Marvin's depiction of the seriously savage Liberty Vallence is a study in cinema psycho sis. Watch the way he uses the whip he always carries to emphasise his point. Little things but they matter when creating character.
The fight itself is marvelously depicted with Stewart, so often a rootin tootin shooy em upper, thoroughly convincing as a lawyer with about as much use for a gun as a eunoch would for a condom.
They just don't know how to make that wat way anymore.
