Review of The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance (1962) by Joshua G — 16 Jun 2008
Generally speaking I don't care much for westerns but this one works for me. This is probably because Jimmy Stewart's lead character is as much out of place in the western setting as I am. Stewart, as Rance Stoddard, comes to the west all full of eastern idealism and sense of order that inevitably leads to conflict with the surrounding lawlessness.
Being unaccustomed to westerns, I can relate to Stoddard as he struggles to survive in an alien environment. All in all, while "Liberty Valence" can be a big heavy-handed at times, it's still an excellent flick and, with the bewildered Rance Stoddard as the lead, seems to go somewhat against the western archetype.
Besides which, I'll watch anything with Stewart in it.
