Review of The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance (1962) by Lori B — 16 Sep 2013
On one level, Ford directs this as a straight genre film (a genre he largely created). It has the pretty girl, the man in black, the strong, traditional cowboy with the white hat, the comic relief.
On another level, though, this is a movie about the death of the Wild West. It's about the end of an era, and the mourning of that time. It's about how you can make the right choices but regret the, anyway.
This isn't my favorite Great John Ford Movie (Ebert lists five, among which The Searchers is tops on my list), but this is a slyly wonderful movie, one that might seem two dimensional at first glance but that hides amazing depths.
