Mutliple themes, action-suspense, John Wayne, John Ford, and humor make this my favorite western. One of the themes is the dissection of the American hero: what we think we know, what we know, and the why and how the story should be told.
Also intelligently done is the relationship between the rule of law and it's meaninglessness without the will, courage, and power to enforce it.
