Review of The Man Who Laughs (1928) by Jérôme V — 31 Jan 2009
Paul Leni is so underated compared to Murnau and Lang, it's a crime. After such masterpieces as Waxworks and The Cat and the Canary, here comes another great achievement with the sublime Conrad Veidt (one of my favourite actor, an opinion I do share with Christopher Lee.
..) and femme fatale Olga Baclanova (gulp!). A little sappy at times, but the creative direction from Leni and the set design gives an otherworldly atmosphere to this beautiful classic.
